NEW BRITAIN — With Timothy O’Brien scheduled to be sworn in as mayor today at New Britain High School, he will be resigning his seat in the state House of Representatives.
The city charter requires that the mayor serve in only one capacity. O’Brien’s resignation from the House will take effect today.
“I look forward to building on my work in the state legislature to create a bright future for the people of New Britain,” O’Brien said in a statement. “I have always been humbled to serve as the state representative from the 24th Assembly District, and I worked hard to do a good job for the people I represent.”
He had been chairman of the Regulations Review Committee and an assistant majority leader.
O’Brien was in his fifth term as state representative, a term that runs through next November.
Gov. Dannel Malloy must call a special election within 55 days of the seat being vacated to find a replacement, according to state law.
Mayor Pro Tem Michael Trueworthy announced last week that he intends to seek the legislative seat. Fellow Democrat Sharon Beloin-Saavedra, the city’s school board chairwoman, had also indicated her interest in running for the post last month should O’Brien win the mayor’s seat in October.
