BERLIN — A sting operation on the Berlin Turnpike involving multiple law enforcement agencies resulted in five men being charged Wednesday with attempting to solicit a prostitute.
“Basically we had undercover police women on the [Berlin Turnpike] sitting on the guard rail and these men stopped,” Berlin Deputy Police Chief John Klett said Thursday.
Klett declined to say where on the turnpike the sting was conducted. Berlin police were joined by Meriden police and the FBI for the sting.
Anthony L. Brewer, 46, of Hartford; Giuseppe Morello, 66, of Middletown; and Richard J. Kareta, 57, of Belchertown were formally charged with patronizing a prostitute from a motor vehicle and were released on a $5,000 bond with a court date Oct. 12 in New Britain Superior Court, according to a news release from Berlin police.
David M. Jagrosse, 41, of Wallingford, was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle and improper use of a marker plate in addition to patronizing a prostitute from a motor vehicle. Jagrosse was also released on a $5,000 bond, the release said.
Maurice A. Bonner, 55, of Plainville, also was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle and illegal possession of a narcotic substance. He was released on a $10,000 bond, the release said. He also was charged with patronizing a prostitute from a motor vehicle.
Each of the men was held on a non-surety bond, which means they promise to pay a specified amount if they fail to appear in court on the scheduled trial date.
