Residents out in force as Berlin Fair kicks off

BERLIN — Six-year-old Abigail Brock was attending the Berlin Fair for the first time Friday afternoon. Her mother, Rachel, looked on as she bounced up and down on the Euro Bungee, an attraction where Abigail was put into a harness and jumped up and down on a trampoline.

After doing countless summersaults in the air, Abigail ran back to her mother smiling and yelling, “I wanna do it again!”

There were plenty of other activities to draw her interest, including craft and livestock exhibits, a carousel and lots of rides.

Mackenzie Recck, 15, tested her driving skills on the bumper cars as her mother, Shelly, watched her spin around in circles.

“It’s a tradition,” said Shelly Recck, a town resident. “Everyone you haven’t seen all year long, you see them at the Berlin Fair.”

And of course it wouldn’t be a fair without games and prizes. Troy Asal, 3, and his brother Cayden, 5, won a giant frog that was almost their size.

Ron Asal watched patiently while his boys played a water gun racing game, but admitted his favorite part of the fair is the food.

The Berlin Fair is stocked with food for everyone, including cheesesteaks and a new fried veggies stand. There’s also that oh-so-unhealthy, but oh-so-delicious fried candy, including Reece’s and Snickers.

For fair-goers 21 and older, Sam Adams, Twisted Tea and wine are available in the beer tent.

Those attending the fair this weekend should bring a raincoat. The forecast calls for periods of rain today and Sunday.

Special events today include polka star, Jimmy Sturr performing at 1 p.m. and the Nutmeg Cart Club championship at 6 p.m.

The fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 for adults and children 12 and up. Senior tickets are $8 and children 11 and under get in for free.

There is free parking at the fairgrounds at 430 Beckley Road and shuttle bus lots at Corbin Russwin on Deming Road and Connecticut Light & Power on the Berlin Turnpike.
