Event to develop new business partnerships

NEW BRITAIN — When businesses in the city are looking to expand, they can think small and open offices in other states. Or they can think big and leap across the Atlantic to Poland.

The Polish studies department at Central Connecticut State University will be hosting an event called Poland: Business Partner in Central Europe Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the CCSU Institute of Technology and Business Development at 185 Main St.

The event will bring a delegation of Polish officials and business representatives to meet with local businesses from various industries such as banks, credit unions and travel agencies.

“We at the university look at it as a way to grow businesses in Connecticut,” said Richard Mullins, director of the ITBD.

Students who are interested in study abroad programs have also been invited.

“Students who are here, many are looking for opportunities outside of the U.S.,” said Renata Vickrey, a library technician at CCSU helping to organize the event.

The Polish delegation is expected to include Krzysztof Matyjaszczyk, mayor of Czestochowa, Poland, and Marek Cieslak, deputy mayor of Lodz, Poland.

Representatives from the Mielec Special Economic Zone, an area that has different economic regulations than the rest of the country, and Lodz Special Economic Zone are also planning to attend.

Vickrey hopes that attendees “learn that Poland is not an obscure country.” She added that in the past 20 years Poland has had a thriving economy.

“Polish companies are reliable and equal partners to American companies,” she said.

According to a news release from CCSU, Poland’s consumer market is one of the largest in Europe.

“The country’s favorable location, in the center of Europe, where the main communication routes intersect, makes it possible to export goods to all European countries and thus reach over 500 million consumers,” the release stated.
