NEW BRITAIN — Sacred Heart Church on Sunday will be holding its annual All Saints’/All Souls’ Day March for Life and Cemetery Mass.
The march is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at St. Lucian’s Home on Burritt Street.
“As we go along we pray and sing for respect for life,” Monsignor Daniel Plocharczyk said.
Once the procession arrives at Sacred Heart Cemetery, also on Burritt Street, it will stop five times to pray for the deceased.
Following the March for Life, there will be a Mass held at the cemetery.
In case of rain, the march and Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church at 158 Broad St., also starting at 2 p.m.
Plocharczyk estimates the celebration has been going on since the beginning of the parish 117 years ago, and expects a crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 to attend.
“The overall theme of everything that goes on that weekend is life,” he said. “We respect life while we are alive and we prayed for those who have died.”
As part of the celebration, the majority of the graves at the cemetery will be decorated with flowers and candles.
All Saints’ Day is actually Nov. 1 and is a day when the Catholic Church and some Protestant churches honor all of the saints, even the unknown ones. All Souls’ Day is Nov. 2 and honors those who have died.
