NEW BRITAIN — After attending the downtown car show Saturday, visitors are encouraged to head over to Walnut Hill Park for the 14th annual Substance-Free Family Day Celebration, being held from noon to 5 p.m.

Substance-Free Family Day is an event being held to promote a healthy lifestyle and good clean fun without alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

“It is important for families to attend an event like this because they often don’t know what’s available in the community,” said Chris Montes, administrator of the community services division of New Britain Youth and Family Services.

“For anyone who has never been to the providers, whether they just moved or never had the need, this is a way for them to know who’s who.”

The New Britain Downtown District and New Britain Parks and Recreation are working together to publicize the car show and family day event.

Although the event is focused on the prevention of substance abuse, there will be information provided for intervention and treatment as well. The event is supported by 28 agencies varying from Abuse Action Council of CT to Kool Smiles of New Britain. Admittance to the event is free and will include activities such as the State Police rollover simulator and the Fire Department smoke house, which teaches how to escape from a fire.

Purchasing a $3 wristband will be required for eight activities, including a gladiator joust and dino bounce.

There will be a live musical performance by the band Two Piece Suit at 2 p.m. and a magician at 1 p.m. There will also be clowns at the event.

Burgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and cotton candy are among some of the food that will be available.

“It’s going to be really exciting and a lot of fun,” Montes said. “It’ll be a great day to come down to New Britain.”
